TÜV Saarland Foundation

Promoting technical sciences

The TÜV Saarland Foundation is a non-profit foundation with the aim of promoting scientific research and teaching in the field of technical sciences. A particular focus is on safety science and related disciplines.

The foundation’s statutes stipulate that all funds are earmarked for the promotion of research and teaching. This includes scientific studies and research projects as well as support for degrees in technical and scientific fields.

The projects promoted by the TÜV Saarland Foundation often deal with safety aspects of new technologies and technology concepts, as well as with the protection of users, both active and passive. This is illustrated by the following current examples.

Current funding projects

  • Testing of safety-critical materials for the conversion of turbines to hydrogen operation
  • Systematic investigations into corrosion, component testing and process reliability in large-scale algae cultivation in photobioreactors

Engagement of the TÜV Saarland Foundation

TÜV Saarland Foundation Scholarship

The TÜV Saarland Foundation is committed to supporting young talent in their early development phases in order to promote their professional and creative skills. The aim is to support the next generation of innovators and specialists on their way to a sustainable, digital and global future.

For this reason, the foundation has decided to launch a stipend programme in 2024 to mark its 25th anniversary. The programme is designed to support young people through skills development, mentoring and innovation support, targeting students who have the potential to develop solutions to tomorrow’s societal and economic challenges. This is done through financial support, education and building networks.

The programme is intended to support young people with a university entrance qualification who are seeking to complete a bachelor’s degree or other course of study at a Saarland university in the fields of technology, economics, sustainability or social sciences. The aim is to support academic achievement and social engagement and to develop forward-looking skills to achieve a positive impact on the environment, society and economy of the Saarland. The focus is on innovative solutions in the field of education, but also on climate protection and social justice.

Awards for scientific achievements

As part of the 150th anniversary of the technical inspection association TÜV in Germany in 2021, the TÜV Saarland Foundation awarded prizes for outstanding scientific achievements related to the safety of technical systems and processes for the first time. This award is given for scientific theses in technical or scientific courses of study completed at Saarland universities, colleges or research institutes based in Saarland. The board of trustees has decided to award these prizes every two years. The last award ceremony took place in autumn 2023, when two outstanding theses were honoured.

Germany Stipend

Every year, TÜV Saarland Foundation supports six students with the Germany Stipend. The Saarland Academic Foundation selects the recipients, taking into account not only their academic performance but also their voluntary work and family situation, for example if they are the first in their family to go to university. The sponsored students come from fields that are thematically linked to the work of the TÜV. The next round of scholarship awards begins in October, and the Board of Trustees has unanimously decided to increase the number of scholarships from six to eight.

Eduard Martin Prize

In addition, the TÜV Saarland Foundation annually awards one of the Eduard Martin Prizes, which is given for the best doctorates at Saarland University. This commitment underlines the promotion of excellent scientific achievements and the endeavour to support talent in the region.
